Contract situations are probably the last thing on your mind right now, but Arsenal will soon have to decide whether to retain three players or allow them to walk for nothing this summer.
The next couple of weeks will be key in determining the futures of these three players. The January transfer window presents the Gunners with their final opportunity to garner fees.
With Mikel Arteta requiring even more funds to bolster a stagnating outfit in 2025, such sales could prove handy in facilitating potential arrivals. However, it currently looks likely that at least two of Arsenal's out-of-contract stars will remain at the club beyond the January deadline.
Here's a reminder of the trio with their Arsenal contracts running down.
1. Jorginho
Arsenal pivoted to experienced holding midfielder Jorginho having failed to acquire Moises Caicedo from Brighton two Januarys ago, and the Italian has proven to be a valuable addition to the dressing room.
The Italian has never been relied upon as a critical on-pitch performer, with Arteta often using the experienced midfielder to restore control and see out contests.
However, Jorginho has appeared comfortably off the pace in recent outings, especially against Brighton - his fifth Premier League start of the season. It made sense to extend the 33-year-old by another year last May, but it seems like Jorginho's Arsenal career is drawing to a close.
With signs of his influence waning as a controller, I don't see the value in extending the Italian again. He'll walk.
2. Kieran Tierney
Now, there's an outside chance Arsenal earn a small fee for Tierney this month. Celtic are keen on a reunion, and Arteta, given the Gunners' abundance of full-backs, would surely be happy to let the Scot depart.
Tierney was set to leave the club in the summer, but a long-term injury sustained at Euro 2024 meant there was no chance of a departure.
The left-back was back in training before the end of the year and he even earned a start in the Carabao Cup quarter-final victory over Crystal Palace, lasting just over an hour before succumbing to cramp. There's been no action since, with a departure inevitable in 2025.
Whether it's in January or June, Celtic look poised to get their man.
3. Thomas Partey
In one of the major surprises of the season, Thomas Partey has stayed injury free. His Arsenal career has been bogged down by setback after setback, but Arteta has continued to stick by the Ghanaian.
Partey's started all but four Premier League games this term and undeniably put together some impressive periods of form. He's manifested his value, that's for sure, but the situation is a complicated one.
Given his age and injury history, Arsenal are not going to commit to Partey for the long haul. The 31-year-old may only have one more big day left in him, and he'd surely prefer a longer-term deal elsewhere as opposed to signing for another one or two years with the Gunners.
Let's see what happens with Partey, but I don't see him in an Arsenal shirt come the start of 2025/26.
