Arsenal are reported to be close to finalising a move for Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga as they look for a suitable backup option to David Raya.
The Gunners held initial talks to learn the conditions of a potential deal for the 13-cap Spain international and are informed on the £5m release clause inserted in his contract. That will be of great appeal to Mikel Arteta's side as they look for a cheap alternative to initial target Joan Garcia and it seems Arrizabalaga is the man he wants as his side are now preparing to activate the clause.
Kepa wouldn't be the first player to move from Chelsea to Arsenal and while many haven't worked out so well, there are three reasons why he would be a smart signing for the Gunners.
1. Penalty shootout record

As Arsenal's potential backup goalkeeper, it is likely the majority of Kepa's appearances will come in cup competitions with the prospect of penalty shootouts very real.
There aren't many shotstoppers that are better in those situations, with the Spaniard boasting an impressive record. He saved seven out of the 47 penalties he faced while at Chelsea and holds the record as the club's most successful goalkeeper in shootouts. He helped the Blues win the 2021 UEFA Super Cup with two stops after being brought on as a late substitute for Edouard Mendy.
The Gunners have won four of the six shootouts they have contested under Mikel Arteta, but three of those came with goalkeepers who are no longer at the club. David Raya has a decent record saving penalties in games and shootouts, but Arsenal could do with a 'keeper who could be the hero in sudden death situations.
As he strengthens his side once again, Arteta should be looking to go far in domestic competitions alongside challenging for the Premier League and Champions League with shootouts something that could stand in the way. With his impressive record, Kepa could be the man to help them overcome the dreaded spot kicks.
