This Arsenal squad is brimming with top-class players and, at some point, that will pay dividends (back to the law of averages again).

Included in that bracket are Riccardo Calafiori and Mikel Merino: two players signed to bring us to the next level but who have gained few chances because of injury, problems that only make it more difficult for them to acclimatise.

Once up to speed, they should bolster a team which is already strong, is suited to any game state and one that has pushed Man City all the way in each of the past two campaigns, with the last near-miss proving we know how to pace ourselves.

Every club has peaks and troughs – just look at the champions – and hopefully Arsenal are just going through their rough patch now. The group is too good to fall away completely and so rest, training work and more application will go a long way towards addressing present issues.

There is more to come from the Gunners, and a nine-point deficit means that it needs to come now.
