Mikel Merino came on as a substitute with just over 20 minutes remaining and took position in the striker role.

That proved to be a piece of tactical genius from Mikel Arteta as his fellow Spaniard and namesake grabbed two crucial goals to secure the win. He rose highest to head in the first goal before he showcased good positioning to tap in his second at the back post.

It was a standout performance from Merino who put on a show of real versatility. When called upon to be his side's unconventional saviour, he answered perfectly.
