Arsenal fell to their second defeat in as many pre-season games as they lost 3-2 to Villarreal on Wednesday evening.
As they returned to the Emirates Stadium in search of a bounce-back victory following their loss to north London rivals Tottenham, the Gunners failed to make the most of the occasion. Goals from former record signing Nicolas Pepe and youngster Karl Etta Eyong had the Yellow Submarine leading at the break, despite a first Arsenal goal for Christian Norgaard pulling one back.
Villarreal restored their two-goal advantage shortly after the hour mark through a swift counterattack that was ended by a brilliant finish from Arnaut Danjuma. Substitute Max Dowman did brilliantly to win a penalty, which Martin Odegaard slotted away. However, this wasn't enough for Arsenal as they ultimatley lost the tie.
While it was a disappointing result that showed work still needed to be done ahead of the season opener, there were three players that stood out for Arsenal.
1. Max Dowman

Coming off the bench to make his first appearance at the Emirates Stadium, Max Dowman put in yet another impressive display despite being on the pitch for just a short time.
Playing 28 minutes, the Hale End star had an instant impact as he skipped past multiple Villarreal defenders before dragging a shot wide of the post. With 15 minutes to play, he worked his way into the box before drawing a foul, winning his side a penalty, which Odegaard converted. It was the second time he had done so after winning a spot kick in the victory over Newcastle.
Not only did he play a significant part in attack, he contributed in defence, making a great run back to deny the Yellow Submarine a fourth. He wasn't able to help his side level the score, but he was one of few bright sparks in what was a largely disappointing game, a testament to his potential and ability.
