A new year is upon us and it marks an ideal time to reflect on the past 12 months at Arsenal – what a roller coaster they proved to be.

Things began on a sore note in January when the Gunners suffered an early FA Cup exit (a 2-0 loss against Liverpool; their third consecutive defeat) and lay fourth in the league table, five points behind Jurgen Klopp’s Reds.

Then the afterburners came on. In spring, Arsenal channelled their inner Manchester City and set off on a blistering new-year run, earning an incredible 16 wins from the ‘final’ 18 Premier League games. Sadly, that brilliant run was only enough to claim second place.

Events in 2024/25 thus far indicate that more pain is in store but, overall, it has been a good calendar year for the club and one which offers reason to believe this ‘process’ will eventually get the trophies it deserves.

From big away days and goalkeeping heroics to a few important signatures, here are five of the best moments for Arsenal in 2024.

1. The post-Dubai surge

Like the rest of us, it seems that all Arsenal needed was a holiday.

Three successive losses (versus West Ham, Fulham and Liverpool respectively) saw the Gunners start 2024 in utter dejection; their hopes of claiming title glory – or indeed any silverware – dwindling with each passing week.

But Mikel Arteta had a plan: bring the group to Dubai for warm-weather training and give them time to reset after a difficult Xmas period. The result? A blistering return to form that almost brought the title back to N5.

It kicked off with a thumping 5-0 win vs Crystal Palace (they feature a lot in this list) followed by lots of other big results (e.g. a 3-1 win against Liverpool, a 4-1 triumph over Newcastle and a resounding 6-0 demolition of Sheffield United) that put Arsenal firmly back in title contention – we all know what happened next…

The calendar, unfortunately, does not allow for another sunshine escape this January. One can only hope that it will not adversely impact the team to go without.
