Fans have debated all season once again whether Arsenal need a striker but their 2-0 defeat at home to Newcastle in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final made the requirement of a goalscorer glaringly obvious.

With the club without a deadly hitman, there have been a handful of names linked with a move to the Gunners. However, there has so far been absolutely no movement in the market by the club.

If Arsenal are to win any trophy this season, they are in dire need of a clinical striker who can score goals. Here are five options the Gunners should target this month.

1. Jonathan David

Since making his name as one of Europe's brightest young strikers, Jonathan David has been linked with Arsenal in multiple transfer windows but with no real development. That could change this month.

The Canadian international has once again been prolific this term, scoring 17 goals from an xG of 12.9 in 27 appearances in all competitions for Lille. He has also provided five assists, bringing his goal-contribution tally to 22.

Not only would he be a reliable source of goals for the Gunners, but he'd also fit into the side's setup well. Mikel Arteta likes forwards who get involved in the build-up by withdrawing from their position, as well as those comfortable drifting across the frontline. David has done so frequently throughout the Ligue 1 season.

David's contract is set to expire at the end of the season and Lille certainly won't want to lose their star man on a free transfer. Valued at €45m, the French side may be forced to sanction a cut-price deal this month for the striker to ensure they don't lose out on any earnings. While Arsenal are allowed to discuss a pre-contract agreement with David to sign him in July, they are in need of a striker now so should be looking to take advantage of the potentially cheap fee.
