Eberechi Eze made his Arsenal debut yesterday. As far as he's concerned, he made his debut a few years too late, as he wanted the Gunners from a young age. However, it's better to be late than never.
Anyway, Eberechi Eze's debut isn't one that fans will remember in a hurry. While there was plenty of optimism around his debut, it came during unfortunate circumstances.
Eze came on at 0-0, with Arsenal looking like the most likely team to score. It didn't pan out that way, and the Gunners ended up losing 1-0. It was through no fault of Eze's or anybody on Arsenal's team, for that matter, as Dominik Szoboszlai came up with a moment that nobody could prevent.
After the game, Mikel Arteta name-dropped Eze as one of the players who should have put away their chances.
Nevertheless, the game could have been uglier had it not been one of Arsenal's brightest sparks.
All eyes on Eze, but Arsenal fans fell for Cristhian Mosquera
Cristhian Mosquera came off the bench earlier than he would have expected, as William Saliba came off injured within the first 10 minutes. So, Mosquera essentially played the whole match.
He was the Arsenal player who deserved a clean sheet the most. His performance was assured, assertive and mature. You would never have guessed he's only 21 by watching him.
In many ways, he was the perfect person to come on for Saliba. Arsenal fans hardly noticed that Saliba wasn't there, that's the kind of aura in defense that Mosquera had.
Of course, this performance serves Arsenal well. It shows that even without their most important player, Saliba, they can still be strong defensively. This is the exact reason why they signed Mosquera, and the Gunners are now pretty perfect defensively.
It wouldn't be nice to lose Saliba for a sustained period of time, obviously, but it's better to be safe than sorry.
There is bound to be plenty of negativity surrounding Eze right now. This is the case for any new Arsenal player who doesn't score with his first kick of the ball. It happened to Gyokeres, and he scored a brace in the following game.
Eze will come good, but for now, Arsenal fans should focus on the positives. They haven't conceded from open play in three games, and Mosquera has proven himself capable of starting any match from this point forward.
