Arsenal crashed out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle on Sunday afternoon as they lost in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw with holders Manchester United.
It was a comparable first half to the last meeting at the Emirates, with the two sides cancelling each other out before the game burst into life after half-time. Arsenal had lost Gabriel Jesus to a knee injury at the end of the opening period, and they were forced to play from behind after Bruno Fernandes expertly rounded off a rapid United transition.
Despite having the advantage, the Red Devils threw away the momentum less than ten minutes later. Diogo Dalot was shown a second yellow card and given his marching orders for a foul on Mikel Merino.
Arsenal capitalised instantly as they struck back from the resulting free kick. Martinelli's cross wasn't dealt with convincingly by Altay Bayindir and Gabriel Magalhaes quickly restored parity with a deflected effort.
Mikel Arteta's side were then given the chance to take the lead when Kai Havertz was brought down by Harry Maguire to win his team a dubious penalty. A scuffle reminiscent of the old days of this classic rivalry took place before Odegaard stepped up to take and the delay perhaps hindered the skipper, who had his penalty saved by Bayindir.
United just about mitigated plenty of pressure from the hosts to take the game to extra-time. Substitute Declan Rice was denied from point-blank range before Havertz missed a brilliant chance to win it for his side but he unforgivably blazed over from six yards out.
Arsenal's pressure remained throughout extra time, but the Gunners predictably failed to score a second goal which forced the game to penalties. On this occasion, there were no David Raya heroics as United scored all five spot kicks as Havertz, to cap off a wretched performance, had Arsenal's second penalty saved.
Here are the Arsenal player ratings from their FA Cup defeat to Man Utd.
Arsenal 1-1 Man Utd player ratings
Goalkeeper & Defenders
David Raya (GK) - 7/10 - Denied United with a few good saves and was quick to rush out to deal with pressure. Couldn't do much about Fernandes' well placed strike. Adjusted well to make a good save to keep out Joshua Zirkzee's deflected effort in extra-time.
Jurrien Timber (RB) - 6.5/10 - Offered something on the right side of defence as he linked up well with his teammates and helped out in attack. Shot from distance late on but his effort went wide of the post. Withdrawn in extra-time.
William Saliba (CB) - 6.5/10 - Dealt well with the United pressure and did what was required of him. Not the best performance from the Frenchman but a good one to say the least.
Gabriel Magalhaes (CB) - 7/10 - Made an error in the build-up to United's goal, slipping to allow Alejandro Garnacho to run at his fellow defenders. Corrected his mistake however with a well-taken half volley to restore parity for Arsenal.
Myles Lewis-Skelly (LB) - 7/10 - Kept in the side amid Calafiori's absence and he impressed with another good showing. Did both his attacking and defensive jobs well as he linked up well with his teammates but also battled with the opposition. Taken off at the start of extra-time.
