Arsenal appoint new U21s head coach (and it's not who fans thought)

Arsenal have appointed Max Porter as the new head coach of their Under-21s side following speculation that an ex-Gunner was set to take on the role.

Mehmet Ali left his post as U21s head coach to move to Brentford earlier this summer and several reports had tipped Jack Wilshere to return to the academy setup to take the role. However, that speculation ended after he was said to have opted against a second Hale End comeback.

With the former Gunner out the running, Porter became the first-choice option and has now been officially appointed in the role.

An ex-professional with experience throughout the Football League and non-league, Porter has been a part of Arsenal's academy setup since July 2017.

Having first joined as the club's Under-9s head coach, he held a number of roles throughout the age levels before being appointed the Under-19s gaffer last season.

He took charge of the side along with being Ali's assistant manager for the U21s and has now taken the reins himself with support from Ken Gillard, Arsenal's professional development phase lead coach.

On the appointment of Porter, Arsenal Academy Manager Per Mertesacker said: "Max has got the qualities needed to be a successful leader and coach. The environment he creates for staff and young players is always one of high challenge and ultimate care.

"Max is driving the highest standards and is a brilliant colleague and coach. We are all looking forward to supporting Max as he continues to develop in this role, and thank him for all his hard work and commitment so far."

Porter will lead a side that has previously included the likes of Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly and could continue to feature latest superstar Max Dowman this season.
