The chance for silverware has come for Arsenal against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup Semi-Final.
Arsenal has never invested a lot of energy into the Carabao Cup, with the competition often used to rest starters and give youngsters a chance to impress.
But now, with the Gunners into the semi-finals against Newcastle, Mikel Arteta's side has a superb chance to lay down a marker in this first leg at the Emirates Stadium.
Given the Gunners' long injury list, which now includes youngster Ethan Nwaneri for a few weeks, the Carabao Cup might present Arsenal with its only legitimate chance at silverware this season.
Liverpool is rolling in the league, six points ahead of Arsenal with a game in hand, the Champions League looms as even tougher to conquer with the injury list, which right now, leaves the Carabao Cup.
And Arteta is excited for what should be a big night in north London.
"We’re very excited to play the game in front of our crowd," Arteta said via arsenal.com. "A semi-final, an opportunity to earn the right to be in a final and that starts tomorrow with two legs. Obviously they’re going to be two long games against a very competitive team, we know that, but very excited and we need a big, big atmosphere in our stadium."
The Magpies will present the Gunners with a difficult task as Eddie Howe's side have won their last five league games, and come into this clash in serious form.
Arsenal, meanwhile, has been up and down as it struggles to control a mounting injury list, while players like Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard have been struck down by a virus.
Given Arsenal's current position in the other competitions, this two-leg affair could be considered one of the biggest games on the team's schedule for the rest of the season.
Being at home in this first leg, it is crucial to take a lead to St. James' Park because we know how difficult it is to play Howe's side on their own turf. So, the Gunners must take the fight to Newcastle and with little ability to chop and change the squad, expect roughly the same XI that faced Brighton to get the nod this time.
It might be the trophy that fans want, but given how barren things have been under Arteta since that FA Cup win, a Carabao Cup triumph is at least something.
But to do that, a powerful performance is needed at the Emirates to get past a potent Magpies side.
