Right now, the men's football world is dominated by one thing and one thing only: Man City's guilty charges. Recently, rumours dropped that they'd been found guilty of 114 of the 115 total charges levied against them, and now everybody is waiting to hear what their punishment will be.
Naturally, everybody is jumping to their own conclusions. The most tentative suggestions have been fines, which essentially mean they'd be getting away with it completely, given the money they own. The more extreme (but certainly justified) suggestions have been heavy point deductions.
I am an Arsenal fan - I would hate to receive Man City's dirty trophies
Some have even argued for Man City's titles, past and present, to be redistributed. As an Arsenal fan, I would hate that.
If Man City were deprived of their trophies between 2009 and 2018, then Arsenal would only benefit from the potential redistribution of one Carabao Cup trophy. You probably remember it, but given the way Shkodran Mustafi was put on the floor by Sergio Aguero, nobody deserves the trophy less than Arsenal- but alas!
If Man City's entire trophy cabinet were redistributed, even after the breaches, then it would be more interesting for Arsenal. The Gunners, in that scenario, would gain another two Premier League trophies, bringing their total Premier League count to five - but I don't want that.
History only serves a purpose when you learn from it
To me, the integrity of football means far more than being handed consolation trophies. It would feel like a sweetener given by the Premier League to disguise the foulest-tasting drink you've ever had in your lifetime.
We don't need to recreate history - we need the stain to last forever.
Yes, absolutely deprive Man City of the trophies they won. They don't deserve them. However, do not hand them out to the teams that finished second; they were undeserved, too.
Future generations need to know about Man City and the utter disdain they had for English football. If trophies are handed out to mask the seasons they ruined football, then it teaches future football fans absolutely nothing.
Arsenal were one of the teams that beat Man City to the title - not while they were breaching, but still while they were benefiting from the breaches - that means more to me than any second place trophy.
Liverpool, Leicester, Arsenal, Man United. These are all the morally rich clubs that have operated in the correct manner to beat Man City. They were the good side of good vs evil that prevailed. Again, that matters more than rewriting history.
We need football to be sacred again. We need it to be an escape, a form of entertainment, something to cherish. Football has never been more removed from its beautiful creation than it is right now. In 2026, football is a product - it was once a way of life.
Before the financial doping, the Premier League had prestige. It was (and still is) the greatest sporting platform in the world. However, we can't deny that the mighty have fallen.
Every decision made going forward needs to retain the sanctity of football and the grit required to win the Premier League. Handing retrospective trophies to clubs that finished second exacerbates the mess we're in; it doesn't fix it.
