Arsenal fans will love the irony of Lisandro Martinez's Man United rant

They've spent more than Arsenal.

Last night, Man United were humiliated by Atletico Madrid. Arsenal left it until the second half, but they ultimately humiliated Lille. Not to disrespect Lille, but Atleti are clearly the better outfit of the two.

Nevertheless, Man United learned the hard way that they are out of their depth in the Champions League. The biggest club in England had a great season last time out, but they failed to strengthen in the transfer window - a point that Lisandro Martinez drilled home.

Speaking to the media after Man United's loss, Martinez pointed the blame above the manager and made it clear that Man United should have strengthened in the transfer window.

"We had a fantastic season last season," started Martinez. "And now we expect more from the top, from upstairs, to bring in more players to compete, because many teams have brought in many players as well."

Man United has spent more than Arsenal in the last five years

Man United are clearly failing, and believe me, Arsenal fans know it's easy to point the blame anywhere when things aren't going well. However, Man United has absolutely invested in the squad, with a net spend of £-664.4m. Over the last five years, only Tottenham (£-695.95m) has a bigger net spend in the Premier League.

Club

Five year net spend

Tottenham

£-695.95m

Man United

£-664.4m

Arsenal

£-621.7m

Chelsea

£-608.45m

Liverpool

£-569.66m

This is Man United's problem, not Arsenal's. The problem at Man United is not that they haven't spent money - to suggest they haven't invested is, frankly, insulting to all other Premier League teams.

You could certainly argue that the investments have been wasted, sure, but that's just as much a problem with the players in the squad as it is with the recruitment team. After all, those upstairs aren't responsible for, you know, kicking the ball.

In times like these, we absolutely must appreciate the Arsenal players and manager. Man United invested more in their squad in the summer than Arsenal did, but still, Arsenal are the far better team of the two.

Arsenal have reached the point in their dynasty where the players take 100% of the accountability for what happens. Infamously, when hell was breaking loose in North London, Bukayo Saka simply said, "Arsenal fans deserve better," and he stuck by his word.

Yes, Martinez sticking it to the man is refreshing. Football needs more of that, especially in 2026. However, it's not what Man United needs right now.

If Man United wanted to take a leaf out of Arsenal's book, they would be in a far better position right now.

Of course, long may the Man United blame game continue, as far as Arsenal fans are concerned.
