Transfer deadline day has thrown up another opportunity to analyse our North London neighbour's latest panic buy. On Monday evening, Spurs delightedly announced that Randal Kolo Muani was now a Tottenham player, on a season long loan. However, a few minutes looking into his stats revealed that the current PSG striker was likened to a series of players not deemed good enough for the Premier league.
Well known for his attention to detail at Brentford, Thomas Frank has perhaps been a touch remiss with the sanctioning of the signing of Kolo Muani.
Signed as a potential replacement for Dominic Solanke who picked up an ankle injury in the defeat at home to Bournemouth last weekend, it appears that the French striker has more in common with Liverpool, Arsenal, and Chelsea cast-offs than a player of true Premier League quality.

Why have just one PSG reject when you can have two?
Kolo Muani has joined the Tottenham ranks alongside another PSG outlier, Xavi Simons in a less than threatening front three (Kudus included). Any suggestion that Kolo Muani could have influenced the Bournemouth result is nonsensical. Tottenham's problems run much deeper than that.
This really isn't that type of article though (wink), so let's take a look at the top five names on the list of most similar players to Kolo Muani, according to the Fbref.com football statistics website.
Player | Nationality | Club |
---|---|---|
Nicolas Jackson | Senegal | Chelsea (on loan at Bayern) |
Darwin Nunez | Uruguay | Al-Hilal |
Maroan Sannadi | Morocco | Athletic Club |
M'Bala Nzola | Angola | Pisa |
Alexandre Lacazette | France | Al Sugoor Saudi Club |
Randal Kolo Muani compared with Jackson, Nunez, and Lacazette
At the top of the list is Chelsea's unwanted striker Nicolas Jackson who could muster a paltry 30 goals in 81 games for the Stamford Bridge outfit. Jackson's 10 goals [snigger] in the Premier League last season hardly puts him in the elite striker category.
Next up is Darwin Nunez who managed only five goals in the Premier League last season – and that's playing for the champions! However, Spurs fans will no doubt be delighted to learn that Kolo Muani's Xg was 0.1 goals per 90 minutes higher than Nunez last season (0.56) suggesting that the 26-year-old Frenchman has the potential to return 20+ goals in a full Premier League season.
The small snag with all those stats are that they don't take into account the league and team that Kolo Muani has been playing in. 10 goals in 22 matches for Juventus is hardly an eye-brow raising return.

Given a free transfer back to Lyon in 2022, Alexandre Lacazette is hardly an Arsenal legend that Spurs fans will be happy that Kolo Muani is being likened to. Lacazette's 71 goals in 206 appearances came during a period when Arsenal failed to finish any higher than fifth in the league.
These comparisons will have Arsenal fans in stitches
These comparisons may be statistical and only an indication of Kolo Muani's attributes. However, just the mention of some of these familiar flops in the same breath as Tottenham's new loanee striker could be enough to have Arsenal fans in stitches. Not only have Spurs gone all-in on one exiled PSG reject, they've now gone and risked their shirt on another one!
Only time will tell if Kolo Muani will be a hit at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, or not. If he does manage to fire Spurs into Europe, it could be a great bit of business by Daniel Levy. Or would it?
The main problem with this deal is that there is no option to buy the player if he does well. It does make one wonder how low Levy's expectations of the player really are.
