Arsenal want to strengthen out wide this summer, and the club's ability to do that might rest on the Brazilian.
Arsenal's summer window has gotten off to a solid start, with the club coming to terms with a handful of players, but the striker search continues.
However over the past week, we have heard rumblings of the club wanting to strengthen out wide, with only Gabriel Martinelli, Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard and Ethan Nwaneri seen as consistent contributors.
This has led to Real Madrid's Rodrygo being heavily linked with the Gunners, so too Eberechi Eze of Crystal Palace, with the Gunners wanting more depth and players who can challenge those ahead of them in the pecking order.
Martinelli is an interesting one here, as the Brazilian has failed to really stake his claim to be unmovable in Mikel Arteta's starting side. Yes, he possesses the sort of speed and creativity Arteta craves, but the manager wants more, and this is what has led to some thinking Gabby could be on the move.
Granted, for us, it is a silly notion for the club looking for depth and players to move the squad's ceiling to move on from a player like Martinelli, but this is what is being reported.
Martinelli key in Arsenal's winger search?
We are unsure how the proposed sale of Martinelli would go down with Gunners fans, but we can't imagine it would happen smoothly. With the likes of Eze and Rodrygo in Arsenal's sights, the Athletic's David Ornstein is reporting that the Gunners would only sign a left winger if Martinelli leaves.
“We’ve reported on the likes of Rodrygo & Anthony Gordon, I think that’s if a Martinelli leaves. I don’t necessarily think that that’s if he was to stay," Ornstein said.
Would fans be fine with Rodrygo signing if it meant Martinelli is shipped off? That is quite the conversation starter.
But the Gunners need all the players they can get, especially for depth, and moving on from Martinelli doesn't make sense, at least to us. The Gunners reportedly have no intention of moving on from the Brazilian, so it does make the winger search rather interesting.
Arsenal needs reinforcements on top of what it already has, not swapping one player for another.
