Arsenal have been given a helping hand they can't ignore as they look to sign a striker this summer.

The Daily Mirror have reported that Gunners target Viktor Gyokeres does not want to return to play for Sporting next season and he will refuse to do so due to the club 'dragging their feet' over a potential transfer in order to get the best fee possible.

It's understandable why the Portuguese champions are doing so. They want the best price for their best player, but Gyokeres' decision could change things in any negotiations and Arsenal have to make the most of that, even if he isn't their preferred choice.

Reports in recent weeks made it seem Arsenal had turned their attention away from Gyokeres as they began talks with RB Leipzig over a move for Benjamin Sesko, but various issues with that deal have seen negotiations stall.

The German side are wanting a huge fee while the striker's wage demands are said to go against what the Gunners want. If that move is at risk of failing to materialise, Arsenal should consider shifting their focus back to Gyokeres, especially following this news.

The Swede is desperate to leave this summer, citing a reported gentleman's agreement that was made last year, saying he could depart during this transfer window.

Sporting have held firm over any potential loss of Gyokeres as they demand a huge fee while club president Frederico Varandas has been very vocal during the saga.

However, Gyokeres' decision to refuse any return to the club come the beginning of the new season could have an effect on their hopes of securing a big payday. They won't want to keep hold of a player and continue paying him when he is simply not willing to play.

Arsenal should now test the waters with a bid for Gyokeres and see if they can strike a deal. His decision will have an impact on how Sporting view a potential outcome, whether that be now or weeks down the line, but the Gunners can't ignore this.

He is a top quality striker and arguably one of the best in Europe at this current time so Arsenal have to capitalise. The club submitting an offer while Gyokeres fights for a move away from Lisbon could eventually see him be pried out of Sporting's hands.
