Arsenal may live to regret their decision to sell Leandro Trossard as the Belgian attacker prepares to join Besiktas. The Gunners have reportedly accepted an offer for the versatile forward from the Turkish giants.

Trossard is reportedly set to join Besiktas in an €18m plus €2m deal. The transfer is expected to take place after the World Cup in which the former Brighton & Hove Albion man has earned plaudits.

The 31-year-old has been Belgium's main man and fired them to the quarter-finals, where they face the USA. He has managed two goals and as many assists in four games, making him one of the competition's most consistent attackers.

Arsenal shouldn't sell Trossard

There had been much speculation over Trossard's future heading into the summer. Despite only signing a new contract in August last year, talk over a potential sale grew during the final few months of the season.

Trossard came in and out of Mikel Arteta's team but his versatility proved crucial. He registered eight goals and 11 assists in 50 games across competitions.

The Belgian played his part in the Gunners' glorious Premier League title win. That said, much of his effort went under the radar as has been the case for most of his spell with the North Londoners.

Trossard might not be a superstar talent but he is effective whenever called upon. It appears likely that the club will be moving for a marquee left-wing signing but that didn't have to mean parting ways with the veteran forward.

Martinelli must go

Arsenal might have been wiser to listen to offers for Gabriel Martinelli who has still to reach the world class level many anticipated. The Brazilian is undoubtedly a talented winger who can grab games by the scruff of the neck.

However, Martinelli inconsistency is hard to ignore and he goes through phases of being a talisman before stuttering. That isn't what you want from a starter who can no longer be viewed as a work in progress.

At 25, the Brazilian should be at his peak and if this is the best version of Martinelli, then searching for an upgrade is understandable. There is bound to be plenty of interest in him should the Gunners indicate they are prepared to sell for the right price.

With one year left on his contract, the time is now to cash in. But Arteta might look back with regret at not opting to prioritise Martinelli's sale over Trossard.
