Arsenal is in desperate need of a forward in January, and Jamie Carragher knows it has to happen soon.

Arsenal's forward problems aren't new, infact they've been around for the best part of six months.

Having seen injuries and poor form, see a fluid Arsenal attack that puts away chances for fun to one that regularly misses chances due to an out-and-out forward; the Gunners are in dire need of someone who is clinical in front of goal.

With the January transfer window only a week and a bit away from slamming shut, so far, the Gunners are yet to do business, leaving fans wondering what is taking so long given the lack of forward target being glaringly obvious for a while.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher knows that Mikel Arteta must sign a forward, and he also doubts the ability of Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard to carry the load.

"Yes, [Arsenal do need a forward]," Carragher said to Sky Sports via Football.london.com. "And it's not necessarily a guy through the middle; it could be someone on the left, but they're short. I've always felt that. But they definitely lack a spark of creativity between the lines. Down that left side, are [Gabriel] Martinelli and [Leandro] Trossard good enough? Trossard was outstanding in setting up two goals over the weekend [against Aston Villa ]. We all know they're short in that area, but can you get the quality they need?"

So, it doesn't "have" to be a striker according to Carragher, just someone who can come in and provide something for the Gunners in an attacking sense.

With Martinelli and Trossard doing their best out wide, for most fans it is clear that someone through the center is desperately needed.

Several names have popped up over the last few days with RB Leipzig Benjamin Sesko looming as the most obvious choice as things stand right now and with the Gunners falling further behind Liverpool in the race for the league title as Arne Slot's team is six points clear with a game in hand, any more has to happen soon.

For most, the Gunners can't or won't seriously challenge for the title or other honors without serious investment in a forward in the coming week. It remains to be seen if Arsenal will loosen the purse strings, but something needs to happen.

Carragher knows a forward has to come in, so does everyone other person on the planet.

Time is ticking, Mikel.
