Since Mikel Arteta became the manager of Arsenal, no side in the Premier League has received more red cards than Arsenal. It's a worrying statistic, which must be addressed.
The weekend was a miserable one for Arsenal fans. They saw their side pick up their third red card of the season, which resulted in their first loss of the same campaign.
Arsenal is still in a promising Premier League position. However, they could have been in a more established position, had William Saliba not been shown a red card in the first-half.
Arsenal fans must be cautious about pinning too much emphasis on this being the deciding factor. After all, Bournemouth were the better team. However, playing with ten men isn't great.

Unfortunately, Arsenal is accustomed to playing with ten men. In a statistic published by BBC Sport, Arsenal has picked up the most red cards in the Premier League since Mikel Arteta took over.
Team | Premier League red cards (since Boxing Day 2019) |
---|---|
Arsenal | 18 |
Wolverhampton Wanderers | 13 |
Everton | 13 |
Chelsea | 11 |
Brighton & Hove Albion | 11 |
Aston Villa | 10 |
Tottenham Hotspur | 10 |
West Ham United | 10 |
Admittedly, it doesn't make for great viewing. We constantly sing praises for Mikel Arteta and rightly so, but this shocking statistic must be addressed before is considered a perfect manager.
Mikel Arteta is his own harshest critic. It is more than likely the case that he's seen this statistic many times before. However, it is now a case of relaying this to the players.
Unfortunately, Arsenal is not the team who can rebel against Premier League rule changes. Yes, the changes might be ridiculous but they are punished the same when broken. Therefore, the best course of action is to follow them, not protest against them.
Mikel Arteta is a passionate coach, which is part of what makes him great. Sometimes, matches call for more passion than others. Particularly when Arsenal are chasing a goal or retaining a lead, this results in more heat from the touchline.
My only concern is that this passion is transferred on the pitch, in the wrong ways. I would never ask for less passion to be shown by footballers. However, it must be better managed and channelled, particularly in critical moments.
