Arsenal's most reliable left-winger this season isn't even a left-winger

Another summer transfer window slammed shut last week, and many Arsenal fans were left with a lot to be desired. More players left than arrived, with many pointing to the left-wing depth as being troublesome. Fear not, Gooners, Riccardo Calafiori fixed that problem before it even arrived.

Overlapping from the left-back position, the Italian defender has been Arsenal's more reliable player on the left wing. Across all three games of the season so far (yes, we're counting the Community Shield), Calafiori has registered an impressive one goal and two assists; that's despite playing the full 90 minutes only once.

Calafiori doesn't need to adapt his position to fit in at left wing; Arsenal have plenty of options to cover there, particularly with Eberechi Eze changing the game at Villa Park.

However, it's at least comforting to know that Calafiori excels in advanced positions. If anything, it's been Arsenal's strongest side this season, so the hysteria around not strengthening the left side is a bit bizarre to me.

Look, I'm not naive. I know that a few injuries could derail things; this is still Arsenal we're talking about. That said, being an Arsenal fan, it's important not to question the scenarios that aren't happening, and instead be grateful for the reality that's right in front of everyone.

Calafiori has been Arsenal's best player this season, and he isn't overworked. If Arteta continues to manage his minutes well, then he will provide all the creativity Arsenal needs out on the left flank, even if he isn't a natural left-winger.

Squad versatility trumps squad depth every time. Arsenal have impressive depth as it is, but Arteta has a wildcard that most coaches in Europe don't have: Arsenal's versatility.

Almost every player in Arsenal's squad can play in more than one position. It has become a key part of Arteta's decision-making when he brings a new player in: how many positions can they play?

Calafiori is one of the most versatile of the bunch, and he would be more than happy to help Arsenal out in a time of need. For now, though, we'll see him continue to overlap Christos Tzolis, Eze, or whoever occupies the left wing for the Gunners.
