The message from Aston Villa and Crystal Palace could not be clearer: English clubs are thriving in Europe once again. No nation has ever completed the modern clean sweep of the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League titles in the same season, meaning all eyes now turn to Arsenal to complete a historic feat.
Now, Mikel Arteta’s side have the opportunity to finish the job by delivering Champions League glory on Saturday and finally rewarding years of progress with the biggest prize in club football.
First, Aston Villa swept aside Bundesliga opposition SC Freiburg last Wednesday to secure the club’s first major trophy in 30 years. Although Unai Emery’s side entered the final as favourites, they still produced a commanding performance on the European stage in Turkey.
Then, in Leipzig last night, Crystal Palace rose to the occasion in a tightly contested Europa Conference League final against Rayo Vallecano. Despite an inconsistent campaign, the South London side justified their status as favourites with a composed display under pressure.
Two European trophies are already heading back to the Premier League, and with one final still to play, Arsenal now have the opportunity to complete the clean sweep and cement England’s dominance on the continental stage.
However, this will be far from straightforward. Paris Saint-Germain can justifiably be considered favourites given their performances throughout the knockout rounds this season, their status as reigning champions, and the fact they overcame Arsenal over two legs when it mattered most last year.
Still, Arsenal can take confidence from the removal of Premier League pressure and their impressive unbeaten run in this season’s Champions League. With momentum, belief and history on the line, Mikel Arteta’s side have the perfect chance to make a statement on Europe’s biggest stage.
Step up the likes of William Saliba, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard, your chance is now. Arsene Wenger thinks so.
Premier League dominance?
It is worth noting that no country has ever completed the modern European treble of the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League, with the latter only introduced by UEFA as its third-tier continental competition in 2021.
You have to go back to 1990 for the last time one league dominated European competition in such fashion, when Serie A, widely regarded as the strongest league of that era, completed the clean sweep. AC Milan lifted the European Cup, now known as the Champions League, Juventus defeated domestic rivals Fiorentina to win the UEFA Cup, now the Europa League, while Sampdoria claimed the Cup Winners’ Cup.
It would be a remarkable achievement for Arsenal to pull off. Surely, then, fans across the country will be backing Mikel Arteta’s side in Budapest to complete the historic clean sweep, won’t they?
