Arsenal are going to have to re-evaluate their transfer strategy in the near future as they look to preserve the level of their current squad, and that might be in motion with their latest transfer target, Kees Smit. The Gunners have a superb squad that is capable of competing for various titles, and they hope to end this season with at least one.
Mikel Arteta's men go into this weekend still as Premier League title favourites, and they have a good-looking path to the Champions League final, although Atletico Madrid have proven that they can defeat big teams in the Champions League this season, even if they have struggled a little in La Liga.
Arsenal have spent huge amounts of money to build the squad they have now, with hundreds of millions spent across the last couple of summer transfer windows.
But that kind of spending cannot continue, at least not under the current spending rules. Clubs must balance spending with profits, and while Arsenal are likely to sell some fringe players who want to be starters this summer, they still are not going to be able to pull off huge money deals like they have been.
That meant they will likely have to start taking a leaf out of Chelsea's book in scouring the planet of young talents with big potential, paying a little above market to sign those players, but with the knowledge there is potential to save tens of millions by signing those players at a younger age rather than when they are top players at the age of 25, for instance.
Arsenal linked to Real Madrid transfer target Kees Smit
Given the likelihood Arsenal will start shopping in that market, we have seen plenty of links with younger talents over recent times. The latest is Dutch talent Kees Smit, who has been linked with a number of clubs due to his rapid rise.
The 20-year-old has scored four and assisted nine so far this season, which is an impressive return for his youthful age. According to TeamTalk, Arsenal, Liverpool and Real Madrid are all in the mix to sign Smit.
Smit's current side, AZ Alkmaar, have reportedly employed Jorge Mendes to handle the likely Smit departure, and it's claimed a price of between ÂŁ52million and ÂŁ70million will be commanded.
That's a big fee for a young player with relatively limited experience, but Premier League clubs are said to be encouraged by the fact Smit has a physicality to his game that could allow him to take a Premier League switch in his stride.
