Arsenal spent a lot of money to boost their squad depth last summer and the football Gods took it personally.

Injuries have ravaged the team right from Day One, when Kai Havertz picked up a knee issue at Old Trafford. All of Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Martinelli, Viktor Gyokeres, William Saliba, Gabriel and Noni Madueke have been sidelined at various points since then, while Ben White was only just back in the fold when he sustained a hamstring problem versus Wolves.

Fans might think there is a curse on the team and, sadly, that is borne out in a shocking statistic from Sky Sports Football Journalist Sam Blitz on X: Arsenal have had 100 different injuries since the start of the 2024/25 campaign, with the aforementioned White knock bringing the Gunners up to the grim century mark.

Not only is it the highest number in the Premier League for that time period, it also far exceeds the amount suffered by Manchester City (just over 80) and Liverpool (fewer than 70); the Gunners’ two main title rivals.

Crazy injury stat illustrates how Arsenal have the worst injury problems in the Premier League

The latter point serves to dispel notions that the schedule shoulders all blame and implies, instead, that a lethal mix of bad luck and perhaps poor medical practices/bad load management from both the boss and his coaching staff are at fault too – though one should be careful not to cast aspersions on matters or people about whom little is known behind closed doors.

This remarkable figure serves to highlight the tough job Mikel Arteta has faced even with the huge level of investment in recent years. Furthermore, it lends credence to the sense of injustice amongst fans – even if no sympathy will be forthcoming from rivals – about the hard time Arsenal have endured of late and it might spark fears over the club’s ability to keep up the title fight should such a dismal medical record persist.

Any team would find it hard to stay afloat in these conditions but the Gunners have arguably the best squad of all to navigate it and they have ridden the wave successfully thus far, remaining top of both the league and the UCL tables whilst a Carabao Cup quarter-final beckons next week.

The tide must surely turn though, and a rare midweek off this week (the first time for Arsenal since August) should help the players to recover fully before they take to the pitch again – Everton await this Saturday and a tired effort like that of the Wolves match will not suffice if the title dream is to live on.
