Arsenal assistant coach Carlos Cuesta is set to leave his role at the club to become the manager of Serie A side Parma, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Spaniard has been a key part of Mikel Arteta's coaching setup since first joining the club ahead of the 2020/21 season and will depart after a period in which he has played a part in turning the Gunners back into title challengers.

With talks now at the final stages, Cuesta will take on the first managerial role of his career as he takes charge of the two-time UEFA Cup champions.

Cuesta joined Arsenal in August 2020 at just 25-years-old and five years later, is set to become one of the youngest managers in Serie A history as he takes on his new role.

Having played for the youth team of Spanish side Santa Catalina, he opted against a playing career and spent time working as a coach in the academies of Atletico Madrid and Juventus before making the switch to north London.

It didn't take long for Cuesta to achieve success with the Gunners, helping coach them to a penalty shootout victory over Liverpool in the 2020 Community Shield just one day after his official appointment. The club also won the same trophy in that manner three years later against Manchester City.

Cuesta has been involved in Arsenal's two battles for the Premier League title with City and that saw him earn praise and recognition from former Gunner Granit Xhaka. Speaking to the Athletic in 2024, the now-Bayer Leverkusen said: "I am sure that one day Carlos Cuesta will be a manager for a big, big, big club,

"I say this because he knows what he wants, he has clear ideas. I am certain that one day we will see him on the touchline as a manager."

Xhaka's prediction has turned out to be true as Cuesta now takes the reins at Parma, who Carlo Ancelotti managed early on in his career.

He will be the first coach to leave the Gunners' backroom staff to pursue a managerial position since Steve Bould swapped his role for a new gig as the head coach of Arsenal's Under-23s side (now the Under-21s).

Arsenal fans can be happy for Cuesta with his ability to get a job in one of Europe's top five leagues showing that Arteta is an influential manager to work under. However, it does mean the Spaniard will likely have to search for a new member of his team in a summer that already proves to be a busy one with transfers.
