There are just seven days remaining of the summer transfer window, and Arsenal are yet to land the superstar attacker they've reportedly been pursuing all summer. However, there is still a very viable option on the table.
Julian Alvarez has consumed Arsenal transfer discourse in recent days, with supporters chiming in with an array of different opinions on the Argentine. Many argue that his desire to join Barcelona should deter the Gunners from making their move, while others are insistent that Mikel Arteta would be breaking his own rules by acquiring a player who isn't automatically convinced by the project on offer in North London.
These arguments are certainly valid, but they ignore two simple reasons as to why Arsenal should be looking to pull off this ambitious move. If they can convince Alvarez to 'open the door' to a switch to the Emirates, then the Gunners should get it done.
With that said, here are the two pivotal, but very basic, reasons why Arsenal should sign Alvarez in the next week, despite the completely reasonable concerns.
Julian Alvarez is very good at football
Ultimately, Julian Alvarez is an exceptional footballer. There are questions around how he fits into Arsenal's squad and concerns about how he doesn't solve the left-wing problem, but what cannot be questioned is how good he is.
The striker has managed 30 goal contributions or more across all competitions in each of his last four seasons. This is a level of production no one else currently in Mikel Arteta's squad can match. Bukayo Saka is the only player on Arsenal's books in the last four years to have managed this, and he did it once.
Not only is he capable of scoring outstanding goals from range, but Alvarez is also creative in and around the box and is the sort of multifaceted forward that tends to thrive in Arteta's system. He'd complement the likes of Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz well, while he'd provide the stardust in attack that has so regularly been mentioned as the one thing the Gunners are missing.
Sometimes, you just have to add a great player to your squad if they're available and work out the fit later on. Ultimately, if Arsenal add Alvarez to their group of attacking options, they'll be much better off for it.
Arteta has proven himself to be an elite coach, and he'll find a way to accommodate Alvarez whilst coping with the existing left wing options he has at his disposal. If you give a great manager great players, they'll work it out.
Even if Alvarez may not be frothing at the bit to sign for Arsenal, if he does ultimately join the Gunners, he'll want the move. He's not going to agree to a transfer he has no interest in. Players can change their minds, and supporters have to accept that an Argentine is always likely to dream of playing for Barcelona given Lionel Messi's legacy at the Nou Camp.
Julian Alvarez is an upgrade on Viktor Gyokeres
The second reason for Arsenal to put their money where their mouth is when it comes to signing Alvarez is that he's ultimately an upgrade on Viktor Gyokeres.
The suggestion is that if the Gunners were to land Alvarez, that would probably leave Gyokeres surplus to requirements. It's certainly difficult to envisage a world where the World Cup winner, the Swede and Kai Havertz can all co-exist in one squad.
Barcelona have been loosely linked with Gyokeres, and that would provide Arsenal with a convenient way out of their commitment to the 28-year-old, whilst also paving the way for Alvarez to come in.
It's not a slight on Gyokeres, but Alvarez is on a different level and is two years younger. The Sweden international is praised for his goalscoring, whilst being lamented for bringing very little else to the table. Alvarez scored just one goal fewer than his Arsenal counterpart across all competitions last season, but provided significantly more value in almost every other aspect of the game.
If Arsenal can somehow pull off this upgrade at a reasonable price before the window closes, they simply have to.
