It was a roller-coaster of emotions for Arsenal as it was defeated 1-0 by West Ham at the Emirates.

Arsenal slumped to a 1-0 defeat to West Ham at the Emirates that firmly puts the Gunners' title chances on life support with Liverpool having the chance to go 11 points clear at the top of the Premier League.

It was a horror day for the Gunners who looked toothless up front without a recognized striker and Mikel Merino couldn't find his shooting boots as he did against Leicester.

The Arsenal attack suffered against the Hammers' low block, and with each passing minute, the visitors looked to be more comfortable, and when Jarrod Bowen's header sailed past David Raya just before halftime, fans had that sinking feeling.

Already not looking like scoring one goal, now Arsenal needed two, and on 73 minutes when Myles Lewis Skelly was shown a red card after VAR intervened, the game was as good as over.

But there was more mixed emotions to come from the game.

Defender Ben White made his long-awaited return and went agonizingly close to an equalizer late on but his shot narrowly missed the far post.

Arsenal skipper Martin Odegaard said via arsenal.com that "It’s great to have him back," and we echo those sentiments, with the defender being sorely missed and we can only imagine the response had his shot found its way into the net.

But remember we said there was mixed emotions?

Because while it was great to see some relief on the injury front, the football gods, as we know, have a cruel sense of humor, especially this season.

Young star Ethan Nwaneri was substituted in the 81st minute and was seen hobbling off on the sidelines and Mikel Arteta didn't sound too convincing when assessing Ethan's issue.

"It was just fatigue, I think," Arteta said via arsenal.com.

Oh, it better be fatigue.

But a quick scroll through social media tells us that it might not be "just" fatigue, and that there may be something more sinister going on with Nwaneri and in truth, it would continue with this season's theme that Arsenal finally gets a player back from injury, only to lose another straight away.

That voodoo doll is getting a serious working over, my friends.

So Arsenal lost the game, potentially lost Nwaneri to injury and welcomed back White.

That sums up the season to a tee, doesn't it?
