Arsenal has already signed a couple of players this summer, but that big fish is yet to be landed.
We are nearly at the end of June, and Arsenal's summer is suddenly starting to crank up a notch.
Mikel Arteta and Andrea Berta have already been on the front foot, Martin Zubimendi, Kepa Arrizabalaga, and Christian Nørgaard all signed or very close to it, and while Zubimendi is a good replacement for Thomas Partey and Kepa a solid backup for David Raya, some aren't sold on Nørgaard.
Still, it is another solid, proven Premier League player in. But does he lift the floor of the squad? Not likely, but for all the Gunners' good work over the past couple of weeks, there is a glaring ommission.
The striker.
We have heard good and not-so-good things about the pursuit of Benjamin Sesko, with his reported release clause and a high salary demand. Plus Viktor Gyokeres reportedly wants Arsenal, so the club has a decision to make.
Arsenal moving swiftly, but striker has to be next
Three signings already, but none are the one the fans really want. And we get the sense that it might be a little while yet before that No. 9 walks through the doors.
Of course, there are the Rodrygo links which have been picking up serious steam over the past 72 hours, but if we are being honest, getting a striker in should be the first port of call.
Talks have reportedly progressed with both Sesko and Gyokeres, but nothing substantial aside from Sesko following the Gunners on Instagram. So make of that what you will.
Does it move the needed one way or the other? Not likely, but it is an interesting development.
With the Gunners set to start their preseason in a couple of weeks, it is well-known Arteta wants his striker signed, sealed and delivered by then.
Will it happen? It should, but as we know, things rarely go smoothly at this time of year.
Yes, the Gunners have gotten off to a solid start with Kepa, Zubimendi and Nørgaard, but it feels like empty calories until either Sesko or Gyokeres are signed.
