Arsenal have been told they have no chance of signing Julián Alvarez this summer following an update provided by Atlético Madrid CEO Miguel Angel Gil.

Atleti's chief executive confirmed his and club's position is clear that the Argentinian is not for sale in the transfer window and he is expected to stay put in the Spanish capital.

This will come as a big blow to the Gunners as he had been identified as a dream target this summer, but it shouldn't affect them too much as there was always a feeling securing his signature would be a difficult task.

Julián Alvarez won't leave Atlético Madrid this summer

Barcelona have been the primary suitors for Alvarez throughout the summer while Arsenal have also shown an interest, but are aware of the striker's preference to join the Catalan giants.

In response to comments made by Barca president Joan Laporta, Atlético CEO Gil said: "My position is clear, the club’s position is clear. We’ve made it known to the player, his representatives, and the president of Barcelona.

"I have absolutely no doubt that Atlético is the right place in the world for Julián, and that Julián is the perfect centre-forward for Atlético Madrid. We want to keep him. I recently heard the president say that the offer he made to Atlético Madrid wasn’t unlimited. My only response is that our answer is unlimited.

"We do NOT want to transfer him. We didn’t accept an offer of €100 million, and we won’t accept one of €150 million or even €200 million."

The Gunners had been fully aware of Alvarez's preference to join the La Liga champions which meant they had never really explored a move fully, but were ready to pounce if a transfer across Spain never materialised.

While there was no serious work done on a deal, Mikel Arteta's side are reported to have flirted with the possibility of using Viktor Gyökeres as a makeweight in any potential talks for his Argentinian counterpart.

However, it now looks like there is absolutely no chance for Arsenal to sign Alvarez after Atlético appeared to fully close the door on any potential move away for their number 19.

It will be a wait-and-see situation if the Gunners look to explore other striker targets, but after Gyökeres' decent return in his first season in North London, 21 goals in 55 appearances, there should be an eagerness to fully back the Swede so he can build on that as he and his side look to defend their Premier League title.
