Arsenal vs Aston Villa match preview

Just as pressure was starting to mount on Renée Slegers, Arsenal have claimed back-to-back wins this week, so can they continue this momentum? On Wednesday night, Alessia Russo's hat-trick saw the Gunners cruise to victory in the Champions League against Benfica in Borehamwood. With holders Barça Femení and record eight-times winners OL Lyonnes their next two opponents, this was a vital victory.

Meantime, last Saturday, Arsenal fought back from a goal down to beat Tottenham in the North London derby, thanks to a long-range strike from Georgia Stanway and then a spot-kick by Russo. Before this, the Gunners had failed to win five successive Women's Super League matches for the first time in their entire history.

This pretty much brought to an end their title aspirations, even at this early stage, cranking up the pressure on Slegers. Thus, third place has to be the aim now, with the Gunners currently seven points adrift current occupants London City Lionesses, who they welcome to the Emirates in a fortnight. So, can Arsenal continue their winning streak?

Aston Villa meantime also have nine point on the board, so will travel to North London believing a victory is possible. Back in September, Natalia Arroyo was sacked as head coach, after the Claret and Blue Army picked up just two points from their first four WSL games.

Well, since the arrived of interim boss Brian Sørensen, things have improved. He drew his first game in charge against Crystal Palace, before back-to-back victories over Liverpool and Everton. Noelle Maritz broke the deadlock last Sunday, before Amalie Vangsgaard's brace secured victory at Goodison.

Villa then beat rivals Birmingham City in the League Cup on penalties on Wednesday, so sit third in the gigantic league phase table, still unbeaten. Thus, Arsenal cannot take victory for granted, and will have to work hard for three points come Sunday lunchtime.

Renée Slegers remains without star midfielder Mariona Caldentey due to a thigh injury, while Selina Cerci, Chloe Kelly and Frida Maanum are also sidelined, Géraldine Reuteler was a surprise starter against Benfica, but either Lisa Baum or Stina Blackstenius could return to attack here.

Meantime, as Slegers rotated her lineup in the Champions League, Emily Fox, Lotte Wubben-Moy and Leah Williamson are expected to return in defence.

Brian Sørensen travels to London without Lucy Parker, Jill Baijings, Ellie Roebuck, Kamilla Melgård and captain Rachel Daly. Sørensen made eight changes in the League Cup, Anna Patten, Lynn Wilms and Justine Kielland the only players to keep their places against Birmingham, but will largely revert back to the team that beat Everton in their last WSL match.
