4. Liverpool 1–1 Arsenal – 23rd December 2023 (at Anfield)

  • Arsenal: Gabriel Magelhaes (4)
  • Liverpool: Mohamed Salah (29)

Neither side were in the mood for dishing out early Christmas presents. Victory for ether side would have seen them top the table at Christmas. That honour went to Arsenal, a draw being enough to keep them at the Premier League summit at Christmas for the second successive year. If only they had been in that position when it mattered in May!

The scoring was done and dusted within the first half an hour of an entertaining encounter. First, Gabriel headed in a Martin Odegaard free-kick (a sign of thongs to come) to put the Gunners ahead after just four minutes. Then, with 29 minutes on the clock, Salah equalised with an emphatic high finish past Raya after collecting a raking pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold.

In an intense atmosphere, Arteta would have been happy to have come away with the point. They would go on to finish two points behind Manchester City and seven ahead of Liverpool.

We wanted to do that against a team that plays that way in this atmosphere," Arteta told Sky Sports, reported on BBC Sport. "To do that today shows that we can go to any ground and play that way.“
