Arsenal welcome Newcastle to the Emirates for the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final on Tuesday night.

With the Gunners having a mountain to climb in order to compete with Liverpool for the Premier League title, this competition has taken on a newfound importance for Mikel Arteta's side.

Arsenal booked their place in the last four after beating Crystal Palace 3-2 by virtue of Gabriel Jesus' maiden hat-trick for the club. The north Londoners are currently on a 13-game unbeaten run in all competitions, but they were held by Brighton heading into this fixture.

Manchester United's point at Anfield on Sunday at least limited the damage.

Newcastle have been in a rampant mood over the past month and are one of the form Premier League outfits. Eddie Howe's side are returning to a level akin to their 2022/23 pomp, claiming victories in their previous five league outings to complement a 3-1 victory over Brentford in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

The Magpies edged past the Gunners in the first meeting between the two sides at the start of November. Dream transfer target Alexander Isak scored the game's only goal, and the Swede enters Tuesday's cup tie in a rich vein of goalscoring form.

Here's our preview of Arsenal vs Newcastle in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

This is the first League Cup meeting between the pair since October 2010, which Arsenal won 4-0 on Tyneside.

Arsenal team news

The Arsenal squad was bogged down by illness last week, with Kai Havertz, Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard among the reported sufferers. Havertz has missed the last two games, while Odegaard and Martinelli were both on the bench at Brighton.

Havertz could be eased back in by starting on the bench, but Odegaard and Martinelli should be back in the starting lineup.

Ethan Nwaneri looks set to miss out after suffering a muscle injury on Saturday, with the youngster joining Bukayo Saka, Raheem Sterling, Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu on the sidelines.

White may be back in action before the end of the month, while Sterling is expected to make his comeback within the next couple of weeks.

Jurrien Timber can return from suspension.

Predicted Arsenal lineup vs Newcastle: Raya; Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Lewis-Skelly; Partey, Rice, Odegaard; Martinelli, Jesus, Trossard.

Newcastle team news

Bruno Guimaraes and Fabian Schar are both suspended for the first leg, but Howe has options in reserve. He would've been encouraged by Sven Botman's performance at Tottenham after the Dutchman recovered from his second long-term knee injury since joining the club.

Anthony Gordon and Joelinton picked up knocks on Saturday but both are expected to be fine for Tuesday's cup tie.

Newcastle will be without Callum Wilson, Emil Krafth and Jamaal Lascelles, while Nick Pope remains a doubt.

Predicted Newcastle lineup vs Arsenal: Dubravka; Trippier, Botman, Burn, Hall; Tonali, Willock, Joelinton; Gordon, Isak, Barnes.

Arsenal vs Newcastle score prediction

These two ties with the Magpies are going to be proper slogs. Howe's outfit have rediscovered the rugged aggression which made them so hard to play against two seasons ago, and Arsenal must be prepared for a couple of throwback battles with a place in the Carabao Cup final at stake.

It'll be interesting to see how much Howe rotates here, with Arteta's recent shuffling seemingly enforced due to illness and injuries.

Newcastle will be thrilled that the second leg is at St. James' and they'll aim to frustrate the hosts here. A draw would be an excellent result, and they may even be okay with a one-goal deficit.

Prediction: Arsenal 2-1 Newcastle
