While domestic success has rarely been an issue for Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain, neither club can say they're laden with European heritage.

The Gunners may be without a league title since 2004, but only Liverpool and Manchester United can say they're more decorated among English clubs. PSG, meanwhile, have won relentlessly in contemporary times following the arrival of Qatari cash.

Capable of hiring the brightest thinkers and most talented personnel, QSI have long been obsessed with reaching the pinnacle. However, Champions League glory has continued to elude them. Like Arsenal, they've reached the final just once - without success.

That's what renders their semi-final duel so intriguing. Rarely have these two teams crossed paths on the grand stage, with their intertwined history starting not with the Champions League, but a now-defunct competition.

Let's take a look at Arsenal's head-to-head history with PSG.

I'm sure many of you reading weren't around to enjoy the pleasures of the Cup Winners' Cup. Nor was I!

While Arsenal are yet to win either one of UEFA's two major club competitions, they have got a couple of European trophies in their cabinet. The Gunners claimed Fairs Cup honours in 1970 and triumphed in the aforementioned Cup Winners' Cup 24 years later. The Gunners edged past Parma in the final, but had to bypass PSG in the last four.

While the French outfit weren't yet laden with superstars, David Ginola and George Weah were among the familiar names then strutting their stuff at the Parc des Princes. They'd also overcome Real Madrid to make the semi-finals. The two ties were mightily tight affairs, but Arsenal were the happier of the teams after earning a 1-1 draw away from home in the first leg.

That set the stage for a memorable night at Highbury in the decisive return fixture, and it was the late Kevin Campbell who produced the tie's decisive moment in the opening ten minutes with a textbook header. A stout defensive line were able to navigate the rest of the contest expertly, with Alan Smith describing the performance and result as a "classic case' of '1-0 to The Arsenal!'"

It wouldn't be until 2016 when the two sides met again, with the pair facing off for the first time in the Champions League. On their return to the Parc des Princes, Arsenal rode their luck in the opening 45 minutes and were fortunate to only be a goal behind. PSG's profligacy opened the door for a Gunners resurgence, and Alexis Sanchez struck the equaliser in the final 15 minutes amid an improved second-half showing to earn the visitors a point in their group stage opener.

Arsenal also struggled against Unai Emery's Parisians in the home fixture on Matchday 5, with Edinson Cavani's wasteful night ensuring the hosts escaped with a point. Future Spurs hero Lucas Moura was the star of the show, netting a lovely free-kick in an entertaining 2-2 draw. The result seemingly opened the door for PSG to top Group A but another stalemate, this time with Ludogorets in their final group game, meant Arsenal finished in pole position.

A 10-2 aggregate defeat to Bayern Munich ensued.

Mikel Arteta, who represented both clubs as a player, has helped the Gunners ditch the scars of their continental shellackings of the previous decade, evolving the north Londoners into one of Europe's most physical and stubborn outfits. Their newfound identity was laid bare as they welcomed PSG back to the Emirates at the start of the 2024/25 league phase.

Arteta's men barely had to get out of second gear in their comfortable 2-0 victory, with goals coming from Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka in a controlled first half.
