Arsenal was soundly beaten again by Newcastle, with the Magpies advancing to the Carabao Cup final.

After the 2-0 defeat in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi final, Arsenal knew the task at hand in the reutrn leg at St. James' Park.

But they didn't heed the warnings.

In the first leg, chance after chance went begging, while Newcastle was clinical in front of goal, and the Gunners couldn't afford to repeat the same mistakes in the second leg.

But they did.

After being lucky that Alexander Isak's goal was ruled out for offside in the opening minutes, with just 18 minutes gone, the ball fell to Martin Odegaard in the box, with the goal at the captain's mercy. A chance to get back into the tie and quieten the home crowd had come.

And once again it was squandered with Odegaard's shot hitting the upright and then a mere minute later, James Murphy scored to end the game as a contest with the Magpies now 3-0 on aggregate.

That left Mikel Arteta once again frustrated at the crucial moments that his team failed to take advantage of.

"We had so many expectations to believe that we could turn it around," Arteta said via arsenal.com. "We didn’t generate momentum, especially in the first half, the game started in the first action almost with them scoring and then the goal being denied. Then we had the moment, two big moments, with Martin. We didn’t capitalise and in the next action, they scored the goal and obviously the game shifted and then in the second half, we started to struggle as the game went by. We didn’t generate enough situations in the final third and the game started to get away from us."

Now, the Gunners will get a 10-day break to recharge the batteries and with Gabriel Martinelli's hamstring injury, the break has come at the perfect time.

With the fixture list now easing, as Arsenal will now play three games in the next 21 days as opposed to one game every three days, but that will be little consolation right now.

Newcastle showed the Gunners a clean pair of heels in both games and proved how crucial it is to take your chances and in truth, this tie will be remembered as the Alexander Isak tie with the striker tormenting Arsenal's backline.

Missed chances were again a theme as another trophy opportunity has come and gone for Arsenal.
