Usually during international breaks, Ben White enjoys a quiet fortnight in which he can rest and recuperate. This time, though, he was very much in the spotlight, scoring for England, becoming the 34th Gunner to do so, which equals the record.
After Jarell Quansah withdrew from the England squad, Thomas Tuchel called up the Arsenal defender, controversially selecting him and not Trent Alexander-Arnold.
White had not featured for his country since March 2022, seeing 45 minutes of a friendly against Côte d'Ivoire, before a reported falling out with Steve Holland in Qatar saw him head home from the World Cup early. Thus, his reintroduction was a divisive event, booed by sections of the Wembley crowd when he came on in place of Fikayo Tomori on Friday night.
Well, those fans were surely feeling pretty silly when, 12 minutes later, White was on hand at the back post to poke home the Three Lions' opener. The day though did end in disappointment. Deep into injury time, referee Sven Jablonski adjudged that White had fouled Federico Viñas in the penalty area, following video review, thereby pointed to the spot, and Fede Valverde lashed home the equaliser to secure a draw for Uruguay.
Nevertheless, going back to White's goal, this equalled some history for Arsenal. As already mentioned and as noted by Opta, he has become the 34th player to score for England while representing Arsenal, the joint-most of any club, alongside Manchester United and Aston Villa players.

Note: List contains each player's first England goals while representing Arsenal.
Both Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze were on target for England earlier in the season, while Myles Lewis-Skelly also opened his international account back on the opening night of World Cup qualification against Albania a year ago. Declan Rice's header at Villa Park against Andorra in September took his tally to six goals for the Three Lions, eight fewer than Bukayo Saka, who most recently broke the deadlock when Serbia visited Wembley in November.
Rice, Saka, Eze and probably Madueke too are all World Cup-bound this summer, but they could be joined stateside by White, something that was very much not on the cards until recently.
