Brazil are out of the World Cup following a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Norway in the Round of 16. An Erling Haaland brace sent the record-holders home in humiliating fashion with question marks over many of Carlo Ancelotti's men.
One player Selecao expected to thrive in North America this summer was Gabriel Magalhaes. Fresh off the back of his best season in Arsenal colours, he cemented his status as one of the best defenders in the world.
Gabriel played an instrumental role in the Gunners' Premier League title triumph. Dominant displays at the back and a constant threat from set-pieces, he should have been in the running for a place in the Team of the Tournament.
A World Cup to forget for Gabriel
Instead, Gabriel endured a difficult campaign which ended in defeat to Norway and a losing battle against long-time rival Haaland. His domineering personality and prescence wasn't on display for the South Americans.
Much of that can be attributed to him missing his defensive partner at club level. William Saliba almost took a backseat to Gabriel last season, with his extraordinary performances given less of a focus than the Brazilian's.
Saliba has been rock-solid for France who are red-hot favourites to win the World Cup. The 25-year-old is proving just why many, including Marcel Desailly, believe he is a 'world class leader.'
Gabriel without Saliba is like a fish out of water and his outings for Brazil highlight this. It's a testament to the partnership they have built at the Emirates and also gives the Frenchman his flowers after playing second-fiddle last season.
Saliba is key for Gabriel
It's important to point out the different factors that contributed to Gabriel's struggles during the World Cup. Let's be honest, this Brazil team is nowhere near the standards of the 2002 world champions.
Gabriel will now have plenty of rest in time for Arsenal's pre-season and Arteta will be delighted his centre-back has returned unscathed on the injury front. He'll instead be watching Saliba potentially help France win the World Cup.
"Their level now is something incredible, unbelievable. That togetherness and chemistry is unique and really good. I’m proud of Gabriel and Saliba, really" - Arteta speaking back in September 2024.
You can make arguments for both sides regarding which of Arteta's defensive duo is superior. But one thing is clear, Gabriel needs Saliba more than Saliba needs Gabriel.
