Arsenal open their account for 2025 on New Year's Day as they take on Brentford away from home.

Life without Bukayo Saka started with a measured but uninspiring triumph over Ipswich Town on Friday night to extend the Gunners' unbeaten run to 11 games across all competitions. However, Liverpool's emphatic victory at the London Stadium on Sunday means Mikel Arteta's side are nine points back in the title race.

Given their injury woes and the Reds' inevitability, Arsenal require a mini-miracle if they're to get their hands on the Premier League title in May.

The Gunners simply have to keep on winning, but trips to the Gtech are rarely straight forward. Brentford have their fair share of injury issues themselves, and they were beaten at home for the first time this season just before Christmas.

Thomas Frank's side have continued to function in Ivan Toney's absence and rank among the highest-scoring home teams in the division. However, their dire away form means they enter the new year 12th in the table.

Here's our preview of Brentford vs Arsenal in the Premier League on New Year's Day.

Brentford team news

Well, where do we start?

Brentford's injury woes have only worsened ahead of Wednesday's game. Mark Flekken and Ben Mee are the latest casualties with the pair forced off during their stalemate at the Amex. Both are unlikely to feature on New Year's Day

Mathias Jensen and Sepp van den Berg are doubts due to respective hamstring and groin injuries. Ethan Pinnock is carrying a knock, while Rico Henry, Igor Thiago, Kristoffer Ajer, Aaron Hickey and Josh Dasilva are all out injured.

Predicted Brentford lineup vs Arsenal: Valdimarsson; Roerslev, Collins, Ji-soo, Lewis-Potter; Norgaard, Janelt, Damsgaard; Mbeumo, Wissa, Schade.

Arsenal team news

There's unlikely to be much change from Friday night's victory, although Riccardo Calafiori is bound to appear after warming the bench last time out. While Myles Lewis-Skelly has been excellent since stepping into the senior set-up, the Italian could return to the XI on Wednesday.

This is surely a game for Declan Rice at the base of midfield given Brentford's threat in transition, and we could see Mikel Merino come into Arteta's engine room.

Havertz may start up top with Gabriel Jesus also remaining in the frontline. Bukayo Saka and Raheem Sterling are both out injured. Takehiro Tomiyasu and Ben White are also sidelined.

Predicted Arsenal lineup vs Brentford: Raya; Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Calafiori; Rice, Merino, Odegaard; Martinelli, Havertz, Jesus.

Brentford vs Arsenal score prediction

Arsenal have won three straight at the Gtech without conceding and are facing an injury-ridden Brentford team on New Year's Day.

The Gunners won't be blowing any teams out in Saka's absence, but sound defensive foundations and a fierce counter-press should allow them to control matches without much exertion. They're not aiming to entertain, but the hosts will aim to turn Wednesday's bout into a back-and-forth affair.

The hosts are efficient up top and likely to trouble the visitors with their speed and slick counter-attacking work on occasions, but Arsenal's stoic approach should see them eke out another three points.

Prediction: Brentford 1-2 Arsenal
