After just three training sessions, Bruno Guimarães looked pretty good in Arsenal's penalty shootout win over Como on Wednesday, and manager Mikel Arteta was impressed.
Guimarães didn't get his first start for the club, but he was able to get 45 minutes in the second half and the feel of playing in front of the Emirates crowd for the first time as an Arsenal player. And the Brazilian looked good.
The Brazilian had a lot of touches in key areas. He moved the ball around well and was not really nervous about the occasion of playing a match for his new club for the first time.
Arteta was asked about his debut and his chances of playing against Manchester City on Sunday, to which he didn't close the door fully.
He said: "We’ll have to see. He’s only had three training sessions, but he looked good. He was really pushing to play some minutes today, get his debut and get the feeling of playing in front of our supporters immediately. He’s a player that will make us better, without a doubt."
Bruno Guimaraes isn't completely ruled out of clash against Manchester City
It is fair to say that Arteta was impressed with what he saw from Guimarães.
Playing a match after three training sessions for a completely new team with a completely new playing style is something that not many players are able to do.
Sometimes it is better to ease these players into the team rather than putting them in the deep end within a week or two. However, with players as confident as Guimarães, it does not really matter that much.
The minute he stepped on the pitch, he looked like he had been around for a while and he slotted into the middle of the park fairly smoothly.
Obviously, it wasn't the greatest performance anyone has ever seen, but as far as debuts go, Guimarães had a pretty impressive showing against the exciting Italian team.
He is a player who will continue to improve as the season starts and he gets more and more involved with the team.
But it looks to be pretty good so far, and hopefully he's able to form a great partnership with the other fellow midfielders in the squad, especially Declan Rice, with whom he has had battles on the pitch, because that is a pairing that will be easily among the best in the business in England.
