The brutal reality Myles Lewis-Skelly must accept at Arsenal

Sometimes you don't play, and it's not your fault.

Myles Lewis-Skelly has fallen out of the rotation at Arsenal, despite his promising future. If he wants to play for the Gunners, he must face one uncomfortable truth. Sure, he's versatile, and that's great, but he stands a much higher chance of making the team at left-back. Either way, he needs to improve his defending.

Part of the push towards Myles Lewis-Skelly playing more minutes is that he's versatile, and that should be an asset to Arsenal, right? Well, it's kinda wrong.

His pursuit of versatility could be harming him more than fans want to admit. He won't make the team in midfield anytime soon, and if he wants to play at left-back, he can't just wait for Riccardo Calafiori to become injured; he needs to fine-tune his defensive acumen.

Myles Lewis-Skelly is great, but he's not title-chasing great (yet)

If we're being completely frank, Myles Lewis-Skelly won't start many games between now and the end of the season. His best chance is facing Southampton in the FA Cup, or if the Gunners get a noteworthy advantage in any of their Champions League ties. Other than that, Mikel Arteta cannot afford to experiment.

Myles Lewis-Skelly is an exceptional player; nobody is saying he isn't, but Arteta is simply at a stage of the season where he must stick with what he knows works. It leaves Myles Lewis-Skelly in an awkward position, and one where he might need to accept the reality of not making the World Cup.

However, it is for the sake of Arsenal. In leadership, Mikel Arteta has never shied away from making tough decisions if it's for the sake of Arsenal. Heck, that's the exact reason why there are legitimate shouts of a potential quadruple this season.

How Arsenal can get the best out of Myles Lewis-Skelly

In an ideal world, we would love to see more of Myles Lewis-Skelly. Next season, hopefully, he's better-placed to make the first team more often. As with any young player, though, patience is a virtue.

The good news is that if Riccardo Calafiori becomes injured (with Calafiori being Arsenal's best choice), Myles Lewis-Skelly would not look out of place. Touch wood, that isn't the case, of course.

At the rate Man City is headed in recent weeks, there is a slim possibility Arsenal could win the Premier League title ahead of time. In that case, there's no saying that Myles Lewis-Skelly won't make more appearances in the Premier League. It's a very big if, of course, but that would be the dream situation for Arsenal to give Myles Lewis-Skelly a confidence boost.
