Bukayo Saka's goal against Wales has seen him break an 87-year-old record as he becomes Arsenal's highest scorer for England.

The winger's sensational strike against the Dragons was his 13th for the Three Lions and saw him leapfrog Cliff Bastin to the top of the Gunners' scoring chart.

Arsenal's Hale End graduate has now written himself into the history books for both his club and country and that achievement shows how far he has come in recent years.

Cliff Bastin had been Arsenal's highest scorer for almost 90 years after netting his 12th and final goal for England against France in May 1938, his last ever appearance for the Three Lions.

The late forward was also the Gunners' record goalscorer for an extended period until Ian Wright broke that in 1997 before Thierry Henry surpassed both eight years after.

Wright was one of the closest to breaking Bastin's England record, scoring nine goals for his nation while an Arsenal player. He is tied with Tony Woodcock for the third-most Three Lions finishes during their respective Gunners careers.

After others such as Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck almost achieved the feat, Saka has finally beaten the record held by one of Arsenal's most iconic goalscorers. The moment came as he played his 44th game for his nation, five years after he made his debut, which also came in a 3-0 win against Wales.

Saka grabbed his first Three Lions goal months later as he netted the winner in a 1-0 victory over Austria. He has since gone onto become an important player for his country, appearing at the 2021 and 2024 European Championships, as well as the 2022 World Cup, scoring in the latter two.

His first career hat-trick came in England colours when he hit a treble in a 7-0 win over North Macedonia during a Euro 2024 qualifying game in June 2023.

The achievement came after a huge moment for Saka in his Arsenal career after he made his 200th Premier League appearance against West Ham, also finding the back of the net with his 100th goal involvement in the English top flight.

Saka's record-breaking moment for the Three Lions showed how important he has been for England in recent times and fans will be hoping to continue to do so, as he looks to help both his country and Arsenal to glory.
