Thomas Partey could leave Arsenal this summer after his representatives have held talks with Barcelona over a potential free transfer, according to several reports.

The midfielder's current Gunners deal expires at the end of the season and despite initial rumours he was set to agree new terms in north London, reports have now emerged he could switch the English capital for Catalonia.

Losing Partey would be a blow to Arsenal, who are already bringing in one new midfielder in the form of Martin Zubimendi due to Jorginho's impending departure from the club. The Ghanaian's potential move away on a free will likely force the Gunners to act once again in the transfer window.

The Mirror revealed that Partey's elongated contract talks with Arsenal have offered Barcelona encouragement as they explore a potential move for the midfielder. His former club Atletico Madrid are also motivated by these negotiations dragging on.

Barca manager Hansi Flick is said to be a fan of the 53-cap Ghana international and sees signing him as a cheap way of adding quality to their midfield.

Despite holding talks with the Spanish giants, Partey is reported to prefer a stay in north London, but doesn't want to take a major pay cut. Arsenal also want to keep hold of the midfielder, but would likely have to meet his demands or at least come to a compromise if they are to do so.

With Zubimendi coming to the club and Partey's age and fitness uncertainty, his influence in the Gunners squad is likely to fade heading into the new season. Once his potential new teammate settles, there is a possibility he won't start as many games and that won't be something he'll be happy to stay for.

If Arsenal can promise Partey the game time and agree a good deal with him, they should keep hold of him. However, that does seem unlikely due to the signing of Zubimendi and the other quality in midfield such as Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard and Mikel Merino. However, if the club don't expect the Ghanaian to play as prominent of a role, they should be willing to let him leave for Barcelona. It would be disappointing to lose him on a free transfer and may likely mean needing to sign another midfielder, but that is something they must prepare for.

If Mikel Arteta and Co can't strike a deal with Partey and his representatives, his time in the English capital could very well be up this summer.
