Declan Rice came up with the goods yet again for Arsenal against Newcastle, but Mikel Arteta should be losing sleep knowing he isn't the solution.
When Arsenal signed Declan Rice from West Ham United for over £100m, Arsenal fans were hoping they'd see the return on the club's investment. Long story short, Declan Rice has repaid the dividends and a lot more, to the point where the Gunners now chant "Declan Rice, we got him half price."
As the days turn into months, this chant is becoming more and more true. However, that's not necessarily a good thing for Arsenal, and it's not something that fans should brag about.
Declan Rice is doing the job of two men right now. The England international's best attributes are revealed in the middle of the pitch, but he's also acting as a center forward at times.
Some of Arsenal's best moments this season have involved Declan Rice coming up with incredible moments, often finding the back of the net. Of course, the Gunners saw off Real Madrid in the Champions League this way too.
Declan Rice bails out Arsenal, but Mikel Arteta knows it can’t last
Today, Declan Rice buried a peach of a ball into the far corner. It was a strike that left Nick Pope stranded and without any hope of a save.
However, Mikel Arteta knows that this can't go on. The Spanish manager is rather adventurous when it comes to tactics, but this is more through necessity rather than play. Given the choice, he'd obviously prefer Declan Rice to stick to his position and what he does best.
This can only be achieved if Arsenal go out and sign a striker in the summer transfer window. Mikel Arteta has already hinted at this, claiming "The ones upstairs will do what they have to do."
And Arsenal fans hope that they do. While Declan Rice has been the saving grace for the Gunners this season, he is just one man. He cannot keep doing the job of two men, otherwise he'll burn out before fans can really see the best of him.
You could argue that at West Ham, Rice was doing the job of 11 men. You'd be right in claiming this, but Rice was younger then. At Arsenal, there should be no excuses for players playing in a less-than-ideal position, where their best traits are compromised.
Sign a striker, and let Declan Rice do what he does best without burn out.
