Watching a transfer target join a different club isn't always easy, but that's part and parcel of Arsenal's squad being as stacked as it is. Unfortunately, it now looks like Marc Guehi is joining Man City.
Arsenal has been a long-term admirer of Marc Guehi. The Crystal Palace center back, who has won the FA Cup, Community Shield and represented the England national team, is believed to be one of the best defenders in the country.
It seems only natural, then, that he would end up joining Arsenal. After all, Mikel Arteta wants the best players in the Premier League to house themselves at the Emirates Stadium.
That said, if news from Fabrizio Romano is anything to go by (it more often than not is something to go by), Marc Guehi is heading to Man City instead.
Marc Guehi is Man City-bound
Fabrizio Romano claims that Man City and Crystal Palace has no problem on their club-to-club agreement. Now, they are focusing on club-to-player negotiations with Marc Guehi and his representatives. Rumor has it that those club-to-player negotiations are progressing fast.
As much as this feels like a gut punch for Arsenal fans, it was a move that everybody could see coming from a mile off. Those realist fans would have braced their cores to soften the blow.
Marc Guehi was always going to lean towards Man City, but that's a compliment to Arsenal. As wild as it is to say, making the Man City team is much easier than making the Arsenal team... At least in defense.
Arsenal wants Marc Guehi, but they don't need him
William Saliba and Gabriel are comfortably the best defensive duo in the world. When they are both fit, which is Arsenal's ultimate goal, nobody is separating them.
As individuals, William Saliba and Gabriel are both comfortably better than Marc Guehi. As a duo that understands each other, this only tightens the chokehold they both have on Arsenal's defense.
Look, Marc Guehi is good. He would obviously improve Arsenal's squad depth, but he's so good that he doesn't want to be a squad, rotational player. He wants to be the main man, as he has been at Crystal Palace. That's understandable, but it's not something Arsenal can offer.
Arsenal's defense is pretty futureproof. They have some excellent young defenders, even outside of Saliba and Gabriel; Piero Hincapié, Cristhian Mosquera and Jurriën Timber can all cover at center back if required.
