Arsenal are planning to offer Mikel Arteta a new contract this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Gunners are reportedly ready to hand the Spaniard a new deal that will see him continue his tenure as manager, having returned to the club in December 2019.

The news comes less than a day after Arteta led his side to just their second ever Champions League final with a 1-0 semi-final victory over Atletico Madrid.

Arsenal to offer Mikel Arteta new contract

Romano revealed on Wednesday afternoon that Arsenal are planning to offer Arteta a new deal in the summer, having already decided to do so in March.

The Italian claims that was always the Gunners' plan, regardless of how the season comes to an end in terms of success.

The Spaniard has come under scrutiny this season with many claiming he isn't the man to take the North Londoners that one step further to win trophies.

Until March, he had Arsenal fighting for an unlikely quadruple, but defeat to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final and a shock FA Cup exit at the hands of Championship side Southampton either side of the season's final international break saw that dream reduced to a potential double.

The Gunners suffered a stumble in the Premier League as two defeats and just one win in April saw their strong lead at the top of the table reduced with City leapfrogging them for a short period of time.

However, back-to-back victories over Newcastle and Fulham, as well as City drawing 3-3 with Everton, have seen Arsenal extend their lead to five points and just three wins away from winning the title.

Arteta's latest triumph saw him better Diego Simeone as his side managed a 2-1 aggregate win over Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals of the Champions League to progress to the final for the second time in their history, and the first time in 20 years.

With Arsenal just four wins away from an incredible double achievement, Arteta is said to be focused on titles at this current point in time, but is "in love" with the Gunners' project and is looking forward to the talks.

His current deal runs until the end of the 2026/27 season so it is certainly a smart move for Arsenal to tie him down to renewed terms before they come to an end.

While the Gunners have struggled to get over the final hurdle in recent years, it looks like this could be the year they end their trophy hoodoo and Arteta has been incredibly key in that, taking them from mid-table challengers to serious contenders on both a domestic and continental front in less than seven years. A new deal is certainly what he deserves.
