Despite recent set-backs, Mikel Arteta has still built a consistently strong Arsenal side that now just need the trophies to show for it. With four Premier League games to go, every match remains must win, given that this title race against Manchester City may come down to goal difference. Meanwhile, the Gunners are preparing for only the club's fourth Champions League semi-final, facing Atlético Madrid in the first leg on Wednesday night.
Saturday's 1-0 victory over Newcastle, Eberechi Eze's thunderbolt the only goal of the evening, was Arsenal's 39th win of the season. This matches the tally achieved by Arsène Wenger's team in 2001/02, a year in which they won a second Premier League and FA Cup double in five seasons. So, could Arteta's modern-day team break the all-time club record?
Arsenal's most wins in a single season across all competitions
Season | Matches played | Wins | Achievements |
|---|---|---|---|
1970/71 | 64 | 41 | First Division & FA Cup winners |
2001/02 | 60 | 39 | Premier League & FA Cup winners |
2025/26 | 59 (max 66) | 39 | EFL Cup finalists |
2003/04 | 59 | 37 | Invincible Premier League winners |
2004/05 | 57 | 35 | FA Cup winners |
2013/14 | 56 | 35 | FA Cup winners |
2023/24 | 52 | 34 |
Note: All penalty shootouts are counted as draws.
Arsenal's tally of 39 victories this seasons has surpassed both Mikel Arteta's best season tally of 34, set two years ago, as well as the Invincibles, who enjoyed 37 wins. The club's all-time record is 41, which is well within the current team's grasp, one would hope anyway. That season, Bertie Mee's team won the title on the final day at White Hart Lane by a solitary point before defeating Liverpool in the FA Cup Final, with Gooners hoping for a similarly dramatic conclusion to this campaign.
So now, could they surpass another record, namely that of most goals in a single campaign? Arsenal's style of play if often maligned, with Arteta's team regularly labelled "boring" and "over-reliant on set-pieces". Contrary to these stereotypes, this has been one of the Gunners' most-productive campaigns in front of goal.
Arsenal's most goals scored in a single season across all competitions
Season | Total goals scored | Goals-per-game |
|---|---|---|
1930/31 | 135 | 2.93 |
1934/35 | 124 | 2.64 |
2016/17 | 121 | 2.20 |
2001/02 | 119 | 1.98 |
2002/03 | 119 | 2.02 |
2009/10 | 116 | 2.11 |
2003/04 | 114 | 1.93 |
2023/24 | 113 | 2.17 |
2017/18 | 113 | 1.91 |
2024/25 | 112 | 1.93 |
2025/26 | 111 | 1.98 |
This season now ranks in the top 11 in terms of the most goals Arsenal have ever scored in a single campaign. With four Premier League fixtures remaining, as well as two or possibly three in the Champions League, fans will be hoping to have at least nine more goals to celebrate, which would move the campaign up to fourth on the all-time list.
The 121 goals Arsène Wenger's side scored in 2016/17 remains the modern-day high, despite the fact they finished fifth that year, the clubs lowest finish in 21 years. The all-time high is the 135 goals scored by Herbert Chapman's team in 1930/31, picking up the Charity Shield as well as the club's first-ever league title back then, scoring just the 127 First Division goals in 42 fixtures.
As Arteta's team chase a first Premier League title in 22 years, they're unlikely to score the 24 goals required to match that record, but the biggest trophies on offer could soon be heading to N5.
