Arsenal remain interested in signing Joan Garcia from Espanyol. The long-term Mikel Arteta transfer target is only available for £25m, though.
With the January transfer window only around the corner, it only means one thing for Arsenal fans - Disappointment. Despite investing big on some occasions, the last couple of transfer windows have not been overwhelmingly positive for Arsenal fans.
One player who escaped through the netting was Joan Garcia. Despite being a concrete transfer link in the summer transfer window, the shot-stopper remained at Espanyol.
However, Arsenal have not taken their eyes off Joan Garcia, as they seek competition for David Raya.
Fans won’t like Mikel Arteta revisiting a former Arsenal transfer target
According to a report from Ryan Taylor of The Mirror, Arsenal remain interested in signing Joan Garcia in the January transfer window. In fact, the Espanyol goalkeeper is believed to be Arsenal's "primary target."
That said, the report does state that Espanyol are insistent on £25m being the price Arsenal must pay to sign Joan Garcia. This is the goalkeeper's current release clause and it was set highly by Espanyol for this exact reason; they do not want to lose him.
If Arsenal do persevere with breaking this release clause, it would be a disappointing day for Arsenal fans. To spend £25m on a goalkeeper means they should have a shot at the first-team. Let's face it - Garcia does not have a shot at replacing David Raya.
Furthermore, Arsenal are not in any immediate need of thinking about Raya's long-term future. He is only 29 years old, so he is in his prime as a goalkeeper. The way things are going, Arsenal could quite easily get close to a decade more out of Raya.
£25m is quite a hefty amount to spend on one player, especially in the January transfer window. While Neto hasn't proven to be up to Arsenal's standards, it's important that we consider which other positions are needed to be strengthened in the January transfer window.
For example, it is widely documented that Arsenal need to sign a back-up right-winger to replace Bukayo Saka, who is injured for at least two months, it is thought.
Therefore, blowing a large chunk of Arsenal's budget on a goalkeeper who won't start might hinder their plea to sign a back-up right-winger. So, at the very least, we can only hope that Arsenal consider other needs in the squad before choosing whether or not to pursue Garcia.
