Arsenal's squad is easily among the best in Europe at the moment. In fact, it might just be the best in terms of depth and the quality they have consistently across the board.
It is so good that players like Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly, especially the former, were barely getting a look in.
Those two players are ridiculously talented in their own right, but due to the depth and talent Arsenal currently have at their disposal, it is tough to see substantial minutes for players like them who, although are talented, are a bit on the younger and inexperienced side.
Lewis-Skelly, who played huge minutes in the Champions League last season, will be held to the same regard as Nwaneri.
Former Arsenal icon’s wild verdict on Myles Lewis-Skelly has split the fanbase
In fact, there is one Arsenal icon who has gone in on the player, claiming that Arsenal should sell him because he is not good enough defensively to be a left-back.
Former player Alan Smith has argued that Myles Lewis-Skelly should be sold by Arsenal due to a number of reasons that have the fanbase conflicted.
He said: "Myles is just not good enough defensively. He’s been brought up as a midfielder, and when he’s had 1v1s, he has struggled, for example, when Frimpong was up against him in the Liverpool game, because he’s not the quickest either, and he’s not a natural defender.
“He’s got three players in front of him who can all defend better. So, looking forward to the summer, I think it might be a case of selling him, for PSR and all that, being a youth team player, it’s pure profit. So, unfortunately, I think he might have to leave the club.”
It is definitely an interesting take, and fans would feel like a conversation like this is always worth having.
However, the fanbase does seem conflicted. Some fans below the X post are agreeing to the notion of selling Lewis-Skelly because he would not improve as a left-back, as he is not a natural there.
Some want him loaned out to get good minutes to at least get a chance to develop before the club is able to make a decision on whether to sell him.
Some think that it is important for the club to keep him because of how talented he is and how much he achieved just last season. They also believe he is still ridiculously young and he will keep developing as a football player.
Smith's opinion to sell him works through the lens of profits and increasing sales, but it is worth noting that the player did perform admirably for the club against Real Madrid last season, as well as in so many other games.
Letting go of Lewis-Skelly so soon would not be a wise move purely because of how much talent he has already shown in limited minutes.
A loan could be a really good move for him, and it remains to be seen what the club decides to do in the future.
