Coventry City manager Frank Lampard praised Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta for the number of tactical issues that Arsenal always cause his teams.
Arsenal play Coventry City on Friday as reigning Premier League champions, and Lampard, whose Coventry City team was the first one to get promoted from the Championship, will ultimately face the best team in the league in their first game of the season.
It's as big of a test as they come in the country, and Lampard was aware of the task at hand.
He was asked about the kind of manager that Arteta is, his competitive nature, and the way he prepares his teams for every match.
He said: "He’s got that natural competitive force I think we all had. I remember it as a player.
“You always feel like he’s a man of big detail. So you’re coming up against a team that’s going to give you tactical issues, and he’s also very intense on the sideline, which I respect! We all have our own ways of doing it.”
Mikel Arteta is obsessed with preparing for every single Arsenal match
Every single thing that Lampard said is absolutely bang on. Arteta is obsessed with winning. He's obsessed with coming out of a match on the greener side. He wants to always be competing with everyone, and that is the best thing about the Spaniard.
Obviously, the tactical battle is slightly more difficult for Lampard's Coventry City than it is for Arsenal, but Arteta will prepare every single excruciating detail for his players to succeed either way.
It doesn't matter if it's Coventry City or Fleetwood Town, Arteta will treat every match the same, and that's one of the best things about him.
He also must be intimidating to be alongside in the manager's dugout, constantly being emotive, animated, and moving around and trying to give instructions to his players.
That must, even when Arsenal are winning, put off certain managers. This is not to say it puts off Lampard, but he certainly mentions it. He talks about his movements and his demeanour on the pitch, which is always that of a competitor.
It will be interesting to see what kind of tactical plan Mikel has for Coventry. It's going to be a very different game because Arsenal haven't played Coventry in quite some time, and it's a very different team from the ones that Arsenal fans may remember from previous years.
It will be interesting to find out how Lampard also manages against the best team in the league, and it should be a very enjoyable contest.
