Arsenal's win over Club Brugge on Wednesday had positives written all over it. From the great goals from Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli, to the return to winning ways for Arsenal as a team, there was something to be happy about for all Arsenal fans.
Arsenal looked really good, and they swept aside Brugge away from home for their sixth consecutive win in the Champions League this season. They are the only team who have won all their games so far, and that sets a really, really promising campaign up for the Gunners.
In that result was also the long-awaited return of Gabriel Jesus. Jesus played football for the first time in 11 months against Brugge on Wednesday. It almost seems impossible to even write something like that. 11 months is a really, really long time, especially for football players.
Regardless, Jesus is finally back, and hopefully, this time, he is back for good. Jesus, when he is fit and in form, is one of the most exciting players on the team, and some of his talents can definitely be used by Arsenal, especially in some game states where it is really important to link up the attack and have a technically gifted number nine, which Jesus is.
Gabriel Jesus’ return reveals a battle Arsenal fans never really saw
Jesus was asked after the game how the entire comeback was like for him, and the challenges he faced, and honestly, there was one thing that stuck out for me in his answer.
He said: “Everyone was expecting me to score! And obviously, I wanted to score. I had some opportunities, but even with that, I'm so happy and so pleased, because to come back and then to have some touches that I had tonight, and then the way I could move, the way I could keep the ball.
“So with 11 months of helping myself and then feeling scared to come back different, maybe with some limitations, just to walk outside and then play with the boys, I'm so pleased. I feel more than ready. So, I'm here to say God saved my life.”
That line right there. "Feeling scared to come back different", that is something that not many people think about when players are returning from injuries. Those are really, really important psychological problems that keep players from being at their best after a long injury.
Jesus wants to be the player he was before the injury, but there is always this fear of not being as good, or not being the same profile in an athletic sense, which is why his fears make complete sense.
However, he looked good to me, in the limited minutes he was on the pitch for.
It is just great to see that Jesus is finally back. One thing that I especially like about this quote is that it brings out the emotion of the people reading it as well as the person saying it.
Hopefully, there are more good appearances from the Brazilian in the coming weeks, and soon enough, he is able to become an important part of Mikel Arteta's rotation.
