Gabriel Martinelli netted once again for Arsenal in the Champions League as he struck the third goal in a 3-2 win over Kairat on Wednesday evening and in doing so, he closed in on a record held by his side's greatest ever player.

The Brazilian has enjoyed a great European campaign so far this season with his goal against the Kazakhstan Premier League champions being his sixth in the competition this term.

His finish against Kairat has now taken him within touching distance of a feat currently in the possession of Thierry Henry, who is undoubtedly the Gunners' GOAT.

Gabriel Martinelli closes in on Thierry Henry's record

In Arsenal's history, Thierry Henry is currently the only player to have scored more goals in a single Champions League campaign than Martinelli this year. The Frenchman netted seven times in both the 2001/02 and 2002/03 seasons to write his name in to Gunners folklore (as if he didn't do enough to manage that).

That means with six goals, the Brazilian is just one away from equalling the icon's record and two strikes from breaking it.

With another seven possible games to play, Martinelli should really fancy his chances of doing that. After suffering somewhat of a dip in form over the past two seasons, he has drastically improved this campaign, but not in the way some might think.

His best form has been in the cup competitions, with only one of his 10 strikes so far this term coming in the Premier League. A hat-trick against Portsmouth in the third round of the FA Cup accompanies his six European goals.

Not many would have expected Martinelli to potentially be Arsenal's Champions League hero, but that seems to be the case so far. Having scored in the opening game against Athletic Bilbao, he has also struck against Olympiacos, Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich and Club Brugge before grabbing his sixth this week against Kairat.

With five of his goals coming in his first five appearances in Europe, he became the first ever Gunners player to score in five consecutive Champions League games.

In a season where he has already broken records, it looks as if he could have his eyes set on Henry's record to write himself into a niche part of Arsenal's history and he may also be hoping he can be his side's hero as they look to go all the way and win Europe's top prize for the first time in their history.
