Could the Gunners still get a deal over the line for the Magpies star?

Arsenal's search for a new striker is one that most fans want to end with Alexander Isak coming to the Emirates.

However, over the past month or so, that dream has faded with Newcastle in a position of power when it comes to keeping hold of its star man. Having beaten Liverpool 2-1 in the Carabao Cup final and currently poised for a top-five finish, enough to secure Champions League football, Isak has little reason to depart Tyneside.

Despite the club's position of strength, Arsenal have been handed some hope in their utopian pursuit of the Swedish superstar who tormented the Gunners backline on multiple occasions this season.

Thought to be priced out of a move, coupled with Newcastle's steely resolve and great bargaining position, now it appears that the Magpies striker's future isn't as certain as we initally thought.

After Newcastle's 1-0 loss to Arsenal at the weekend, manager Eddie Howe didn't completely dismiss the thought of Isak not being a Magpie next season.

“I never make those guarantees about any player, and it’s not to do with Alex’s future, but I’d be foolish to sit here and do anything like that,” Howe said via football.london.

Hmm, color us intrigued.

Now, Howe's words don't move the needle one way or the other, but once so resolute about his star player staying, now, he is tight-lipped and won't guarantee his future.

Of course, the Gunners could still be priced out of a move, or Isak might want to remain in Newcastle regardless of what Arsenal offer.

After all, the Magpies won a trophy and could be in the Champions League next season, so aside from more money, the Gunners can't offer much more than Newcastle.

So, this will be one to watch over the coming months, and Arsenal can't afford to wait around for its striker; one has to come through the door as soon as possible. Whether that is Isak, Viktor Gyokeres or Benjamin Sesko, someone has to be signed.

And who knows, the Isak dream might not be dead after all.
